Craig Oldhams project the Democratic Lecture is a lecture series, book, and website. The work is culmination and expansion on his work in design education/guidance/motivation. Some of the other projects are below. The book contains some interest thoughts on personal projects, which are valuable to my project, perhaps not in the theoretical part of the essay, but in my overall understanding of the subject. I think it is highly important for me to have these bits of research too as it broadens my understanding of the topic and gives a contextual viewpoint outside of the conventional graphic design criticism.

Craig Oldham is also a key figure in self-set projects, he conducts a wide range of diverse projects that sit in a variety of contexts. Some projects exist as an extension of his professional practice, and more recently, his projects have and self motivations have become a driving force in his personal practice. A lot of Craig’s work has to do with lectures, and teaching, however, some of his projects have a more reflective value like the Hand Written Letter Project, that connects with a wider audience, and is able to involve industry professionals.

Recently Craig has also been involved with GloryGlory2013, which was a project set up by Nick Blakeman and Alex Brown. The project invites industry professionals to have a take on their own personal football chants in a poster exhibition. As with many other higher profile self-set projects, the project involves a wide range of industry professionals, and almost acts as a social experience for designers to get to know each other outside of their professional environment, but within their binding interest. The graphic design exhibition has started to occur to me as a more widely use platform of distribution and promotion. I think in the right way, this can be used to benefit a wide number of people. In this case, the proceeds of the project were donated to charity, giving an even wider context to the project, and perhaps making it more wholesome than contemporary art!
